Salt Spring Island is a wonderful destination and absolutely deserves to be visited. If you are looking to follow up your Salt Spring Island camping excursion with some overnight stops on one or more of the nearby towns or islands, there are some outstanding campgrounds to choose from. Long-distance routes can be reserved in advance but inter-island ferries are first come, first served. Seals keep an eye on things, while seagulls, eagles, and ravens contribute their voices to the general cacophony of birdsong. They set aside a few sites for drop-ins but most of them are by reservation. The terraced slope provides safe driving access into the campground and adds charm to the sunny and forested landscape. Salt Spring Island is on its own unique and wonderful wavelength, evidence of which is that all the roadside retailers you passed (and possibly stopped at) typically operate on the honor system. No one has to compete for a view here. From the beginning of November to the end of February, there are no washroom facilities and only the RV sites are open. One of the more eclectic of the Southern Gulf Islands, tiny Mayne Island features some awesome Japanese Gardens, one of the nicest lighthouses in the province and Miners Bay, which was at one time the most important harbour on the Canadian Pacific Coast.
