Gary, up here in D400 country it is absolutely required to *groove*the right rear tire or you will 'cook' it in 30 laps. Work great 3-8 laps then turn loose! 1/2 as much on the rt rear side of tire and car and none on outer edges to cause extra wear! Rear with the same on both sides can lock down at times or split as right gets hotter going bananas if not addressed first! Hard for the manufacturers to add grooves or sipes because the layout of each changes so drastically from track to track. Adding more sipes which are closer together will increase the tire temperature and will add grip as long as the tire is not overheated, If a tire is overheated and blisters the sipes need to be spaced further apart and possibly a shallower depth of cut should be used, More sipes are typically used on front tires to help them heat up and less sipes on rear tires, especially the right rear. Crew guys many times are notappreciated, they spend a lot of time and when the team is successful they dont get much of the glory. To me getting the compounds in the tires to work is the most important thing. When setting the depth of the blades for siping, place the siping head on the tread block and visually adjust the depth to 1/2 the thickness of the block. A five or seven laps if lucky of bite from hell is needed for all the restarts! The full intent of this rules modification was to potentially help customers get extra life from their IMCA G60s. If you learn to appreciate it and understand that it's bit of an art and takes a fair bit of trial and error, it becomes fun trying to figure out how toimprove the tire's performance.
