No solvents or other chemicals are introduced into the system, and no abnormal pressures are applied like they can be in other methods of flushing. Compared to a $4k transmission, fluid is cheap. I never dropped the pan but I was having no issues with it despite the condition of the fluid. If I had a second gen sienna I would try it via a drain and fill first.
